Artist’s Statement
Each of us has secrets locked up in our heart. The secrets are hidden only because we cannot convey them to our fellows. Words are inadequate, whether spoken or written. I convey my secrets by the images I produce.
I choose my subjects by seeking a deeper participation in the reality I am capturing. I highlight the hidden in our mundane existence. Rather than seek out exotic locations or strange settings, I seek to emphasize what most people see but do not notice in their immediate environment. My imagination interacts with what lies before me to create reflections of my personality. I place elements in my work to reveal the meaning of the image.
My current project involves my hometown of Fries, Virginia. Fries was a mill town, built from the ground up in the early 20th century. An entrepreneur built the town to support a textile factory. In the 1980s, the corporate owners at the time decided the factory was no longer viable. They pulled operating capital away from the mill, and consequently, the town. My portfolio examines how the infrastructure, dating back as far as 1900, is reacting to the passage of time with little infusion of new resources.
